Summary of Research Interests

Understanding (1) the lifecycle evolution of tropical cyclones, and (2) their role in the climate system are the main foci of my research.

(1) Lifecycle evolution of tropical cyclones

(i) extratropical [and subtropical] transition of tropical cyclones:
(ii) development and applications of the cyclone phase space (with Robert Hart);
(iii) realtime simulation of tropical cyclones (with many collaborators in the Department of Meteorology);
(iv) interannual variability of tropical cyclones/tropical cyclogenesis (Robert Hart).

(2) The role of tropical cyclones and organized convection in the climate system

(v) climatological variation of organized tropical convection (George Tsakraklides); and
(vi) representation of the ITCZ and western Pacific monsoon in GCM (Steven Chan)
