Weather: 58/50 this is the 4th sunny day in a row!
note: this is a quick post. I've been slacking on these, but I'll probably add more to it later this weekend.
I've known that I was going to have a 10 mile run in the middle of the week for a while. I can't believe that it has already come and past. I wouldn't say that I was excited for it...I much prefer to do long-ish runs on the weekend.
I didn't have a great run. I ate too much before it, although I only had a banana with some milk and cereal. For the first half of my run, I felt like I had a food baby. It was uncomfortable, so I ran slower.
After about mile 5, I started to feel a lot better. Then, my left calf got a little bit sore around mile 8..I guess that I didn't stretch well enough at the beginning? eh, whatev. Not all of my runs can be super duper.

i almost got hit by a car!
Activity: Running
Distance: 4 miles
Time: 31:56
Average: 7:59
Splits: 8:34, 8:21, 7:26, 7:34
Weather: 68/46 sunny!
On a day as beautiful as today, it's difficult to convince myself to not go for a run!
I thought that my iPod was broken (again) this morning. I restared my computer after installing some updates. Then, it wasn't recognizing it, so I unpluggged it despite the 'do not disconnect' icon. I reset it, but it still wasn't responding. Plus, the folder with an exclamation point came up, telling me to visit Apple support. ugh. Now, since I have a 10 mile run tomorrow morning, I wanted to make sure that I had music. When I got home from work, though, it was miraculously working! well, sorta.
I started out my run well. I def start out afternoon runs much faster than morning runs, for obvious reasons. My iPod kept playing the same album rather than shuffling, but I was content to just have music. Then, I remembered that I had set my iPod to shuffle albums. I can be such a ditz. Basically, it played music, but it's skipping around in the middle of about half of the songs.
I'm pretty happy with my time. I didn't really push myself to run super fast at the beginning, but I had a good pace going for the last half.
I almost got run over at the intersection of O'Bryan Lane and Westerly. There was a car approaching the stop sign on O'Bryan with a right turn signal, and I was cogitating, to use a word from Petter's dictionary, on whether to run in front of or behind it. I should have been paying closer attention since a car that was making a right off of Westerly nearly plowed into me. Seriously, it was about 2 feet from hitting me. Of course, I stopped. perfect, please hit me. I'm waiting.

hey, i didn't get hit. i laugh in the face of danger. hahahaha

Average: 8:28
Splits: 8:33, 8:04, 9:07, 17:04/2=8:32, 7:59
Weather: 53/45 and sunny!
I ran the first mile in 8:33. That's insane. I think that I used to start out at 10 min miles! The third mile is still slow cuz it's Waupelani.
It was such a beautiful morning! It's so great to see some sun cuz it's been really cloudy/rainy all September.
I forgot to check my split after 4 miles cuz my iPod distracted me. again. At the end of about half of my songs, it cuts off the song that i am listening to and inserts a random couple of seconds of some other song. These are quite entertaining usually. For instance, I was listening to a song by death cab at this point in the run, and it cut in with some black dog Robert Plant screams. I can't duplicate these outros, so the hard disk is def all screwed up, not the mp3s. This also only seems to happen when I'm running, not when I'm walking to school. Doesn't make much sense to me that running jostles it that much more and is making it skip? Anyway, they amuse me. keep me on my toes.

Splits: 9:52, 9:13, 9:23w, 9:19, 8:42w, 47:05*2w1f/5, 26:57*1w/3
Weather: 68/61 rained at the beg, but the sun came out for the last hour or so. i have a faint tan!
I talked to Brandy yesterday about how I wasn't sure what distance to run today. She suggested that I run for 2 hours at a low heart rate, and I thought that sounded like a fabulous idea. It's a little hard to gauge how well I did with the low heart rate though since I don't have a heart monitor. I felt like I was running really slow; I could almost walk up hills as fast as I was running. I still prob ran about 9:00 pace when you subtract off my water/food breaks.
I managed to start off pretty slow. That's easy to do. I saw my 2nd split and was surprised that it was that fast since that's the all uphill waupelani section. It's hard to convince myself to slow down tho. After training for so long, I get a little upset each time that I see a 9+ min mile. I did sorta get into a rhythm by mile 5 tho, maybe? (note that mile 5 was prob too fast since it included a water break too. oops.)
On the bike path where it meets Blue Course, I thought that I smelled raspberries, and i wanted to stop and eat some. On the way back I slowed down to investigate...they were those poisonous red berries. oh well.
I usually get some really fast miles when I'm running on campus since it's pretty flat. I was running parallel to, but on on the other side of the street from, this guy who I def could have run as fast as. It pissed me off that I was letting him pass me. low heart rate. blah.
ha can you believe that i'm complaining about having to run slow? i'm strange. It def was a really good idea to do this run tho. My body felt really good, not beat up, afterwards. I did ice my knees anyway. Precaution is always smart.

IM 5K road race spectacular
Activity: Running
Distance: 5K = 3.1 miles
Time: 24:02
Average: 7:44
Splits: 7:47, 8:04, 7:22 + :47
Weather: 64/59 i was a little chilly before it started, but i felt hot during the race
Well, the race was supposed to start at 10am, so we showed up at 930 to leave time to warm-up/stretch/pee (btw i peed 3 times before the race). I guess that the IM race is usually done by the golf course, and they needed extra time for set-up "to keep us safe." I was all hyped up by the time we started at 10:30.
There were some INTENSE runners! I was near the end of the pack of about 70 runners, and I wasn't going slow! After they shot the gun, everyone sprinted off. I was thinking that there was no way everyone was going to maintain that pace. I was wrong. I def started out at the end of the pack. It's insane that people can run that fast!
The route was there and back: the first mile was all downhill, and the last mile was all uphill. When I saw my first split, I thought that I would never be able to keep up that pace. Somehow I went faster on the way back uphill? I even walked a hill cuz my arms were numb (can't be good). I must have been hauling ass! I passed about 5 guys maybe. I bet that the winners were done before I even finished mile 2.
There were only 5 girls running, so I got 2nd. woohoo! The girl that won was about 4'8" 90 lbs tops. She sorta reminded me of Zaiser. Congrats to 'Team Weather Sloths' on their 2nd place finish! (Vic, you totally downplayed your speed!) yay free t-shirts!

Activity: Swimming
Distance: 2850 yds ~ 6.5 mile equiv run
Time: ~1:05
This is def the best time of day to go swimming at the White Building. I shared the wide lane at the beginning, but I was the only one in the pool by noon. A few guys showed up at the end. It's funny: there are always girls swimming before noon and guys after noon.
Today's workout:
1. 400 free warm-up
2. 500 drills, alternating drill and swim, mostly free and back.
3. 100 IM. the IM really tired me out today.
4. 100 kickboard: free
5. 1650 free ladder w/ 15 sec rest. i swam this slower cuz my muscles were tired from the IM.
6. 100 cool down: 50 back, 50 slow free

I definitely overestimated my tolerance to the cold. If this were the middle of the winter, I am sure that I would have been fine with no hat/mittens, but this is September! It was freakin' cold outside! For the first 3 miles, my hands were numb. I tried to extend my long sleeve running top over my hands like mittens, but the arms weren't long enough. Plus, I couldn't see my watch or hold my iPod like that. oh well.
sooo yeah, i started off really slow. I did warm-up eventually tho, and I wasn't really cold for the last half of the run (tho I would not say that i was warm either). I had a small bowl of Rice Krispies before heading out. snap, crackle, mitch, and pop. In hollywood it's all about who you know, and I know crackle.

Weather: 64/64 light rain
I was hungry this morning when I woke up, so I had a bagel and some coffee (and water). Then, I checked in on GRIB/Emily stuff before heading out. There was a line of light showers that went through, but it looked like it should be dry for my run. I was wrong ha.
I've done a lot of 4 miles lately, huh? I really should be running only distances longer than ~6 miles according to my schedule (well, sorta...I'm supposed to run 3 miles almost every Sat, but I usually opt to replace it with a swim earlier in the week), but I semi-trained for this 5K on Saturday. Plus, I took it easy last week. OK, that paragraph was confusing, even to me.

Weather: 57/57 foggy at first, but it got sunny by the end!
I really pushed myself on this 10 mile. I almost felt like it was a sprint...I had to have been running pretty damn fast for the last 5 miles because I averaged less than 8:30 pace with 3 water breaks! Just as it can be nice to do a relaxing run, it is can be satisfying to do a challenging run.
I missed my first split because I was puzzled by a song that came on my ipod. I have like 50 songs on there right now cuz I had to reset it. You would think that I knew every single one of them since I manually added them. Nope, I def don't recall adding "poundcake" by van halen. I do have Van Halen's Best Of on my hp, but I didn't think that I had anything beyond "jump", "panama", "hot for teacher", and "running with the devil" on my mac?
Heading toward Tudek, I passed 3 couples of women running. sorta mad me sad that I don't have any girl friends to run with like I did at RU :( oh, btw yay RU 3-0!
I didn't pre-check my splits after 5 miles, so I sorta lumped them together, tho I accidentally hit the split instead of stop when I crossed over Beaver. My average is really good, but I think that mile 6 was probably pretty slow. There's about a 170 ft elevation climb during this part, and I couldn't have run that mile faster than 9 minutes.
A little before mile 7, (and beg donwhill on bike path in Tudek), I started to get pretty pumped. That's where I started to run really fast, I think. I even did quite well on the bike path hill on Park. I passed a guy on the hill, and I felt pretty cool. tho I don't know if he's really a runner. Passing a guy is still cool.

Jon was going to do a slow 4 mile this morning, and I wanted to do a short run today, so I just went along with him. We went at a nice slow pace since he's doin a long run tomorrow. His 4 mile route is similar to the runs I did last year before I started training, minus the beginning. It's been a while since I've run up Westerly. I used to consider that hill to be hell. That's why I started running up Waupelani: I preferred a short, steep hill to a long, gradual hill.
It was nice to get in a run before tailgating, even tho I felt sleep-deprived. also nice to have a running buddy:-D

I didn't run this 4 mile as fast as the one last week. It's a lot harder to run in the morning when you're not warmed-up, I guess. I also could have pushed myself a little harder. Sometimes it is more satisfying to enjoy running for running's sake and not worry about hauling ass.
High school is back. This is my first time running past the traffic nightmare of State College HS since last year. I usually take Waupelani for my 5+ miles. I guess that I could do that for my 4 mile, but then I would have to sacrifice running on the bike path in Orchard Park. That would make me sad. soooo I subject myself to running past high school students, or it might be better to say that I subject the HS kids to my smelly running clothes. might could.
I missed the first split because I was concentrating on maneuvering around all of the students walking on the sidewalk. After that, I decided to just run and not worry about my splits. This also might have slowed be down. might could.

My goal to wake up at 6am did not happen...I tried, but I was sooo tired. I had to go back to bed. poop on insomnia.
I tried out my new Asics today! They seemed to be fine. I really didn't notice much of a difference between the 2110s and the Nimbuses (Nimbi?). They are supposed to be designed for a neutral/slight underpronation foot, so maybe I will notice a difference on longer runs. Hell, maybe that's why my legs didn't hurt today!
I def started out a little slow. I'm not quite sure if I was awake @ the beginning.
The crossing guard at the intersection of Corl and Westerly is so cute! He put up one of his stop signs for me to cross even tho there were no cars :-D

Activity: Swimming
Distance: 2750 yds ~ 6.25 miles
Time: ~1 hour
wow, I lose so much time when I go swimming! I didn't get into work until nearly 1030! Walking to and from the White Bldg also takes quite a bit of time, I guess.
It's much more crowded at this time than in the middle of the day. Did I mention how much I hate sharing lanes?
Here's what I did:
1. 400 free warm-up
2. 500 drills, alternating drill and swim, mostly free and back. again. i'm so unorginal.
3. 100 kickboard: free
4. 1650 free ladder w/ 15 sec rest
5. 100 cool down: 50 Ingomar back, 50 slow free
It's kinda funny: I've 'run' an equivalent of nearly 11 miles this week without banging up my body. I get to run tomorrow though!

there was kid tightrope walking in front of old main.
Activity: Swimming
Distance: 2000 yds ~ 4.55 miles
Time: ~ 45 min
I think that I entered the pool mid-way through women's swim hour and exited during men's.
1. 400 warm-up, mixed
2. 500 drills, alternating drill and swim, free and back.
3. 100 IM
4. 3 x 100 fast/faster/fastest
5. 100 kickboard
6. 3 x 100 fast/faster/fastest
7. 50 back, 100 free, 50 back, 50 Ingomar Back, 50 free cool-down
I would have done a couple of IMs, but my arms/back felt a little tired. Plus, I didn't have much room cuz I was sharing a lane. Later in the workout, I was a bit hasty in snagging a free lane: the guy was just getting a kickboard. whatev. selfishly, I'm glad that I did it. I love having my own lane.

NVRun lies!
Activity: Running
Distance: 17 miles

Average: 8:56
Splits: N/A
Weather: 59/59 misty
OK, wow, I'm updating this thing 2 days late! I've been busy, I guess, or lazy.. Anyway, the time has at least given me some insight into what was wrong with my knees.
I was semi-confused this morning to find my towel rolled up into a ball in my garbage. I must have been sleep walking last night again. I had an egg and some zucchini bread for bfast around 730AM. Then, I played around on the computer. The power went out. poopies. I headed out around 9 even tho I hadn't used the facilities yet because I wanted to have time to finish my run before the Chi Ep Pi picnic.
The run started out fine..truthfully, I don't remember anything too eventful until about mile 5. I had the novel idea to run the Tudek park portion in reverse since I knew where the path ended. I'm so freakin' intelligent sometimes.
My knees started getting a little bit sore around this time. It's actually about 2 inches below my kneecap on the lateral side of my tibial tuberosity; it almost feels like a sore muscle. more on this later.
As I entered campus, I began to pass an increasing number of men in fatigues. I guess that there was a National Guard convention or something. They actually shut down the portion of University that abuts campus!
I took a bathroom break in the IM building. When I headed back outside, I was pretty cold, and I sorta had to warm-up again. To avoid all the men who were staring at me, I took a left on University rather than running down Curtin. There was soooo much traffic on Park! And there were cars driving on the paved sidewalk by Beaver Stadium. I was a little nervous that I was going to get hit!
I headed over past the Ag Arena toward the farms. Now, I had carefully read NVRun's Tunnel Loop route to make sure that I did not miss the left turn after the tunnel. For the life of me, I cannot find the 'footpath' that 'bears left'...'just past the exit of the tunnel.' Then, me being a dumbass, I decided to run up the hill and try to cut over to Big Hollow Rd somehow. I made a left (and was probably trespassing since I climbed through a gate), ran around this sideways silo-like structure (I can't think of any other way to describe this building), and continued on past piles of dirt that were labeled 'manure', 'sand', 'topsoil', etc., accordingly. As you might have guessed, I had no luck in finding a path down to Big Hollow. Maybe I'll email Marty Mazur and ask him where the hell that footpath is.
Soooo I decided to run around the nursery and head down Orchard toward Fox Hollow. I followed that and then made a left onto Big Hollow (yay I found it!). This part of the run was kinda pretty. The road cuts through the woods, and you almost feel like you're running on a hiking trail (minus that it's paved). I passed a couple of runners. Maybe they were also doing the Tunnel Loop! I should have made a right and taken the bike path back towards Sunset View Park, but I didn't know if that was the right path/didn't want to get lost. I came out near where we tailgated last week, and it sorta made me happy that I knew this new 'secret' path. Note that it's not really secret, but it felt like my own little secret garden anyway.
At this point, I wasn't sure how many miles I had run, but my knees were starting to get really sore. I decided to just cut back across campus and head home even tho I suspected that I'd be 0.5-1 mile short of 18 miles. I'm glad that I did because my right knee hurt a lot later in the day. I'm very happy with my pace, and I would be extremely happy if I can keep a 9 min pace going for the whole marathon (my primary goal is to finish, secondary is to avg 10 min miles, tertiary is to keep up a 9 min pace).
After the run, I stretched some and headed over to the picnic.
After the picnic, I did absolutely nothing. I iced my right knee a few times and ate a lot of food. (I almost finished off an entire loaf of zucchini bread in 24hrs. Petters had one slice.)
Since the run, I have done some research on this leg pain. I don't think that it's shin splints because the pain is too high up on my shin. There are a couple of other possibilities: iliotibial band syndrome, patellar tendonitis, or a stress fracture. I'm inclined to believe that it's one of the first two cuz a stress fracture would be noooo good. I've had patellar tendonitis before tho, and it doesn't feel at all the same. I'll have to see how everything progresses...I'm taking it easy this week by only running twice and swimming more. Now is not the time to get complacent. I am only planning on doing one more long run (20 miles) before the race. I feel mentally prepared for 26.2, and I want to make sure that I am physically healthy enough to run it without hurting myself. In the meantime, I'm planning on doing more (and new) leg stretches as well as adding some squats to my exercise routine.

man, I have been slacking with posting...there's not so much to say, I guess. This 8 mile run is quite comfortable now. I would even venture to say that this route is just about the same difficulty as the 6 mile that I did yesterday. The end of this run is mostly flat/downhill, and I can really get a good pace going.
Something pretty remarkable: looking at my last 3 8 mile runs. I'm damn consistent with my pace! My times were 1:06:34, 1:06:33, and 1:06:28. That really amazes me.
It's been quite foggy here in State College. Today was a little foggier than yesterday though, or it took longer to 'burn off.'
I reloaded music onto my iPod for the party last Friday, and there is some music on there that reminds me of soph/junior year in college. thursday, tbs, rufio. wow, such guilty pleasures.

I haven't run on South Allen in a while, and my split was almost 30 secs faster! yay improvement! Everytime that I run past the four square court, I get a yearning to play. who's in?
Despite drinking a glass and a half of water before the run, I felt a little dehydrated, esp when I was running up Waupelani. I felt pretty good otherwise, and I actually felt sorta 'bouncy.' Activity: Swimming
Distance: 2750 yds ~ 6.25 miles
Time: ~1 hour
Was I one of those girls as a freshman?! It's possible. After all, I did go to frat parties.
Everyone's back on campus, and I must admit that I feel a little suffocated. Last year, mobs of freshmen made me happy because I still felt like a college student. This year, however, I just want everyone to go back home and leave me to my peace. Well, not everyone. If you're reading this, then you can stay!
The pool wasn't too crowded. Lunch time is probably one of the best times to go. I had an okay swim. My knees didn't hurt! super great. Shannon came along again :-D It's always nice to have a workout buddy. Here's the breakdown:
1. 400 free warm-up
2. 500 drills, alternating drill and swim, mostly free and back. again. i'm so unorginal.
3. 100 kick drills: free and breast
4. 1650 free ladder w/ 15 sec rest. cept I took a pee break after 9.
5. 100 cool down: 50 back, 50 slow free
After my bathroom break and Shannon left, I swam in the same lane as this girl that was INTENSE. Most people get in the water and stand around for a second. She literally jumped a few feet out into the water, didn't touch the ground (I don't think, and I'm not sure how she did this), and started swimming freestyle. She lapped me a few times too.

aww the runner scared him away.
Activity: Running
Distance: 10+ miles
Time: 1:25:47
Average: 8:19
Splits: N/A
Weather: 64/57 cloudy
My average pace is probably really good for a couple of reasons: a) I stopped and used the golf course bathroom around mile 3.7ish and b) there were a few extra short rests, due to inreased traffic, where I would not have stopped during the summer.
Well, this weekend was very busy between the picnic/after-party for the new students, 1st football game and tailgate, and the interminable 'hard drizzle' of Ernesto. Since today's high was only supposed to be in the 60s, I planned on sleeping in. yay sleep! I woke up around 9ish, and we made eggs and pancakes around 10. I still felt kinda tired, so I went back upstairs and attempted a pre-run nap. I might have dozed off for 15 min or so, but I lost my tiredness. sooo I headed out for my run.
I was running pretty fast for the beginning of the run. I checked my watch at the 1st mile, and it was about 8:30 (norm about 8:55). After that, I just ignored splits. I don't know the Park Hills area well enough to figure out where my splits are.
During the beginning of the run, I was very distracted. I almost missed my turn onto McBath and had to backtrack a bit. I usually daydream on my runs, but this is by far the worst I have ever been. At about mile 3, I knew that I was going to have to use a bathroom. My options were to go into the golf clubhouse all sweaty or to reroute my run back toward campus. I chose the former cuz it was closer, and I wouldn't have to change my planned route as much. Then, I followed the path (from the 10K) back towards Corl. This path was slightly longer than my usual route through the golf course.
I passed this family standing around with their bikes before passing the elementary school. I don't know why certain people are not considerate at all about moving. I really had to run completely around them cuz they were all spread out. I guess that the boy was trying to get a dog to come over to pet, but the dog ran off as I ran by. He started to cry and the mother said 'aww the runner scared him away.' It was like I wasn't actually a person. I'd do the same if I didn't know myself, I'm sure i.e. laugh about the Crocodile Hunter dying.
I was determined to find the correct bike path through Tudek park this time. I failed. There were no obvious signs off of Aaron to the park, so I followed Aaron almost all the way to Martin St. oops. I did not want to run alongside Atherton, so I made a random right and ran through some woods and ended up on a dirt path that ran by a pretty garden. Next time I'm going to find that damn Tudek path!
There were a whole bunch of people on campus and on Beaver Ave. I had to stop and walk behind people at times. I have forgotten how busy this town gets when school is in session (and when it's a football weekend). If I had run earlier, this would not have been an issue.

yay the weekend went well. yay Clem's :-D
health:
hopin' that my knees don't die on me!
