The Department of Geosciences at Texas Tech University (https://www.depts.ttu.edu/geosciences/) seeks an early-career postdoctoral scholar to provide scientific and meteorological expertise in the areas of lidar based remote sensing of boundary layer turbulence and thermodynamical processes over arid region. The scholar will collaborate on the newly developed ABL-ROAD (Atmospheric Boundary Layer Research Over Arid Domains) program. In addition to empirical boundary layer process studies, the postdoctoral researcher will also perform weather-scale analyses of model data mismatch (MDM) experiments using archived simulations from High Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) models for the broader region.

As part of this opportunity, the researcher will explore and develop new observational tools and MDM approaches for boundary layer processes focusing on the impact of dryland ecosystem on boundary layer kinematics and thermodynamics. Furthermore, the researcher will explore the potential for new and emerging boundary layer profiling systems including lidar, sodar and ceilometer to enhance our knowledge on the boundary layer parameterization schemes. The key tasks involved in the project are to (1) acquire and analyze new lidar and in-situ measurements under appropriate synoptic conditions to document boundary layer turbulence processes over an arid region; (2) synthesize observations obtained from the West Texas Mesonet for time periods > 5 years; (3) systematically investigate how model errors vary as a function of soil-vegetation-atmosphere nexus and associated meteorological conditions; (4) provide insights into the soil moisture control on land-atmosphere interactions toward help developing new parameterizations; and (5) explore the coupling between soil moisture, precipitation, and near-surface temperature in transitional regions (e.g., semiarid and semi-humid) of southwest US.

The incumbent will work with Prof. Sandip Pal and his group members of Boundary Layer Meteorology research group (https://sites.google.com/view/sandippal-ttu/). The position will be based in Lubbock, TX, a mid-sized metropolitan located in the heart of West Texas.

Required Qualifications

Specific qualifications include:

• Completion (by the time of the appointment) of a Ph.D. in meteorology/atmospheric science/physics/environmental science or related field.
• A documented record of research experience in lidar operation, data acquisition and analyses, and interpretation.
• Experience in leading peer-reviewed publications

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications, individuals who have one or more of the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

• Experience with field work and analyses of multivariable meteorological data sets obtained via ground-based meteorological stations.
• Knowledge, and expertise in areas of ground-based remote sensing, dynamics of the boundary layer, and land atmosphere feedback processes
• Experience in the evaluation of numerical model simulations

The Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Research and Operations (CIWRO) at The University of Oklahoma is currently seeking a Research Associate or Research Scientist to collaborate with scientists at the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) in Norman, Oklahoma, on developing methods and applications for uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) for high-impact weather. This position focuses on developing best practices and methods for creating, processing, and analyzing high-resolution imagery from UAS and other airborne platforms (e.g., satellites) for land-surface assessment for a variety of geophysical applications. The position is connected to the Developmental Research and Engineering for Applied Meteorology (DREAM) team based at CIWRO in Norman, Oklahoma, within the National Weather Center (NWC).

The duties of this position are:

1. Conduct field missions and data analysis relating meteorological processes with UAS imagery and land surface characterization datasets, to include correlating severe storm processes to UAS-based damage assessments
2. Contribute to scientific proposals to relate meteorological processes to UAS-based observations and other data available at CIWRO/NSSL (e.g., radar, the Multi-Radar/Multi-Sensor System, etc.)
3. Obtain and maintain operator status on CIWRO and/or NOAA UAS platforms used for land surface assessment and support the safe operation and maintenance of those aircraft
4. Support interactions between CIWRO and NSSL UAS operations and the NOAA UxSRTO, the OMAO Uncrewed Systems Operations Center, and the FAA
5. Build an independent UAS-based research portfolio while contributing to a collaborative research environment
6. Present findings and results via publications and presentations at national/international conferences

The minimum qualifications for the position are:

•A Master’s degree or PhD in meteorology, geography, or related area
•Experience obtaining and analyzing multispectral imagery
•Proficiency in geospatial methods/technologies
•Excellent oral and written communication skills with an ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others

- Respond urgently to breaking & severe weather events on all platforms, including linear, digital, and social media
- Produce/Anchor weather reports on all platforms in a clear, engaging, and impactful manner
- Lead weather coverage & special weather reports, ensuring accuracy and clarity
- Strong leadership/teamwork is a must as our meteorologists are involved in the newsroom & Community
- Must have a positive attitude; will be an ambassador for the station by making personal appearances at community events
- Be fluent in the latest weather technology

Qualifications/Requirements:
- 5+ years experience as a broadcast meteorologist/weather anchor
- Degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, or a related field 
- AMS and/or NWA Certified meteorologist is preferred
- Strong on-air presence with excellent storytelling abilities
- Proven experience in severe weather coverage
- Proficiency in weather software, graphics & technology
- Valid driver's license and good driving record
