The Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science has developed a fun tradition of holding a photo contest each spring thanks to a generous donor who provides prize money and funds to turn the winning photos into canvas prints. All entered photos may be used for other purposes within the department (on the website, to decorate the department, in brochures, on posters, etc.). Do not submit photos until you receive the email announcement from the department (usually in mid-March). Please send photos and agreement form (available in the announcement email) to Lan Lewis lan5340@psu.edu.
Rules
- Entry is open to everyone (graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, staff and post-docs) in the Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science at Penn State.
- Feel free to submit a photo that you have submitted in the past, as long as it did not win a prize.
- There is a limit of two photos per person.
- All images must be "Weather" or "Climate" related.
- All photos should be titled with your last name.
- Photos will not be considered without a completed METpics Agreement Form.
Judging
Photos are judged by a panel defined by the Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science. Images will be judged based upon artistry, visual impact, originality, and topic. The panel will choose a maximum of four winning images. While images of any size and quality will be considered, the department plans to print and display the winning photographs and so image size is an important consideration and may influence the panel's decisions. You can see previous years’ winning prints in the computer lab in 608 Walker, on the walls of 529 Walker, and near the elevators on the 4th, 5th, and 6th floors of Walker. Winners will be announced before the end of the spring semester.
