The Department of Atmospheric Sciences, in the College of Aerospace Sciences (Grand Forks, ND), is seeking applicants with a nationally/internationally-recognized research portfolio to fill a tenure track or tenured Open Rank Professor position. This is a 9-month full time benefitted position that begins 16 August 2025.
The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching up to 3 courses per 9-mo period, maintaining a nationally/internationally recognized research portfolio, and providing service to the department, college, university, and national/international community. Includes academic advising.

Minimum Requirements
It is required that the candidates have a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences or closely related field and pass a criminal history background check. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications
Successful applicants will preferably be a professor (any rank) or postdoctoral fellow at a College/University or are an atmospheric scientist at a national laboratory. They will have demonstrated subject matter expertise in one or more of the following areas: aviation meteorology, boundary-layer meteorology, climate dynamics and modeling, cloud physics and atmospheric chemistry, energy sustainability and renewable energy, mesoscale meteorology and severe storms, stratospheric research, social science, and/or atmospheric science applications involving machine learning or artificial intelligence. This expertise would be demonstrated through prior teaching assignments and/or published peer-reviewed journal articles and books. Ideal applicants will also show evidence of the ability to obtain consistent external research funding. Experience in project management as PI or co-I, and leadership experience are also preferred.

Successful applicants will have the ability to teach, inspire, and mentor students; show enthusiasm for teaching and research; have strong writing and organizational skills; have effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff and students; and will have an appreciation for or experience with diverse constituencies. Research would ideally align with UND Grand Challenge goals (such as autonomous systems, energy sustainability, or big data).

The Department of Atmospheric Sciences is part of the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences at UND and offers degree programs leading to the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences. UND is a UCAR Member institution. Spring 2024 enrollments included 128 undergraduate students (58 majors and 70 minors) and 31 graduate students. Facilities include a 5-cm wavelength dual-polarization Doppler weather radar, two instrumented ground research sites, and use of a Cessna Citation research aircraft in collaboration with a local research firm.
